Troopers halt search for missing Savoonga man

SAVOONGA -- The search for a man who disappeared after jumping into the ocean to
swim after his drifting boat was called off Sunday, according to Alaska State Troopers.
Gambell resident Christopher Kaningok, 20, disappeared into the water about 25 miles
south of Savoonga, said troopers, who got the call just after midnight on Friday.
Searchers from Gambell and Savoonga, along with troopers, spent the weekend searching
for Kaningok without luck, troopers said.
After reviewing the area covered in the search, ocean currents and consulting with
his family, the search was called off, troopers said.
